The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemns, in the strongest terms, the violent interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli military forces. Once again, the apartheid state of Israel has shown that it cannot restrain itself from attacking even peaceful acts of international solidarity with the people of Gaza. The flotilla, carrying activists, aid, and supplies, was an act of conscience and a mission to break the unlawful blockade and deliver much-needed humanitarian support to the people of Gaza.

Instead of allowing this peaceful mission to proceed, Israel deployed its navy to capture the vessels, detain passengers, and silence voices of solidarity. Among those abducted are South Africans are celebrated writer and activist Zukiswa Wanner, Former Member of Parliament Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, and human rights advocate Reeaz Moola who have courageously taken up this journey to fight for the freedom of Palestinians despite the inherent danger. Their detention is not only an affront to human rights, but a direct attack on our nation and its people.

Across the world, outrage is growing as protests have erupted throughout Europe, with ordinary people making it clear that they are tired of Israel’s impunity and brutality. The interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla has only deepened global resistance to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and has further exposed the illegitimacy of its actions.

Importantly, there are still vessels on the water, courageously continuing their mission to Gaza. These ships deserve the full protection of the international community, and every effort must be made to ensure they reach their destination safely.

We call on governments, particularly those of Italy, Spain, and Greece, whose ports and waters are critical to this flotilla mission, to take a firm stand against Israel’s piracy and ensure that such humanitarian initiatives are protected rather than criminalised. The South African government, too, must act decisively. The kidnapping of South African citizens by a foreign military force cannot be tolerated. Strong diplomatic, legal, and political measures must be pursued immediately to secure their release and hold Israel accountable.

Israel has once again revealed its fear of truth and humanity, as it cannot allow even peaceful solidarity to reach the shores of Gaza. However, no amount of military aggression will stop the global movement for Palestinian liberation.
