The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) extends our condolences to the families and loved ones of the 15 individuals who tragically lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision on the R63 between Adelaide and Maqoma in the Eastern Cape.
This horrific accident, which occurred at midnight on Saturday, 3 May 2025, involved a minibus taxi traveling from Qonce to Cape Town and a bakkie. Among the deceased are the drivers of both vehicles and 13 passengers. An additional five individuals sustained injuries, with one succumbing to their injuries upon arrival at the hospital. This incident stands as one of the deadliest road accidents in the Eastern Cape in recent memory. It highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to enhance road safety across our nation.
The EFF calls upon the Department of Transport and all relevant authorities to ensure that all roads, especially those in rural and high-traffic areas, are regularly inspected and maintained to prevent such tragedies; to increase the presence of traffic officers to monitor and enforce road safety regulations effectively; and to have continuous education programmes for drivers and pedestrians about road safety measures, emphasising the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic laws.
Furthermore, we call for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances leading to this accident to prevent future occurrences. We urge all South Africans to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads. Let us work collectively to foster a culture of safety and respect for life.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
