The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemns of the ongoing escalation of violence in Sudan, where the people continue to suffer unimaginable atrocities at the hands of warring factions. Recent reports from el-Fasher in the Darfur region reveal mass killings of civilians, indiscriminate attacks on hospitals and displacement camps, and the deliberate starvation of entire communities. This marks yet another dark chapter in a conflict that has torn Sudan apart for years and has left the African continent watching one of our oldest nations bleed.

Sudan has not known peace for decades, however, this has escalated since the removal of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The power vacuum left has seen country trapped in a brutal power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. What began as a competition for political power has become a war for control over Sudan’s vast natural wealth which includes gold, oil, and land, leaving millions of civilians caught between bombs and bullets.

Reports from Darfur reveal mass executions, ethnic cleansing, and systematic targeting of non-Arab black communities, including the Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit peoples. Satellite images confirm the existence of mass graves, while survivors describe scenes of unimaginable horror which include rape used as a weapon of war, the burning of villages, indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas, and the execution of men, women, and children on sight.

Entire communities have been sieged, starved, and bombarded, while schools, markets, and medical facilities have become battlegrounds. The deliberate targeting of humanitarian convoys and the looting of food and medicine have plunged millions into desperation. The UN estimates that over 10 million people have been displaced and more than 25 million now face acute food insecurity representing the largest displacement and humanitarian crisis in the world today.

This war, unfortunately goes beyond the internal; it is sustained and complicated by foreign interests. The United States, Europe, and Middle Eastern states continue to pursue their own economic and geopolitical agendas, supplying weapons, financing proxies, and influencing negotiations while ordinary Sudanese people suffer. The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have deep stakes in Sudan’s gold and agricultural land, while Western powers eye its strategic position along the Red Sea and its resources.

These forces treat Sudan as a pawn in their imperial games, with little regard for the suffering of its people. Therefore, the silence of the so-called international community in the face of mass killings and starvation highlights their complicity and lack of care and empathy for black people.

The EFF stands firmly with the people of Sudan who continue to bear the brunt of this endless cycle of violence. Africa cannot stand idle while imperial forces fuel and profit from the disintegration of a fellow African nation. The African Union must urgently intervene to enforce a ceasefire, guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid, and hold all foreign actors accountable for their interference.
