The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) welcomes the long-overdue arrest of four men connected to the brutal murder of Oupa John Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody. In November 2022, DJ Sumbody was assassinated by gunfire in Woodmead, Johannesburg in what looked like a targeted hit that also claimed the life of another individual.
We commend Gauteng’s organised crime detectives and the Political Killings Task Team for their determined and methodical investigation, which has now resulted in the arrest of three suspected hitmen and the individual believed to have ordered the killing. A firearm recovered during the operation has been linked to multiple murders, highlighting the systemic nature of this violence and the importance of specialised units to combat it.
This breakthrough is a direct validation of Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkwanazi’s decision to speak out about the internal threats against the Political Killings Task Team. The EFF finds it disturbing that instead of strengthening this effective task team, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was attempting to disband it, which can only serve the interests of criminal syndicates and corrupt politicians. We reaffirm that Mkhwanazi was right to expose the criminal networks that are being protected at the highest levels, and we reiterate our call for a legislature led investigation into Minister Mchunu’s conduct and links to these syndicates.
The Political Killings Task Team is not just necessary but it is also indispensable. Its dissolution would be a betrayal of the families of DJ Sumbody and many others who have lost loved ones to politically and criminally motivated assassinations.
The EFF stands with the family of DJ Sumbody. We demand that the NPA create a compelling case, unlike their previous high profile cases, work professionally, and bring those responsible to book in a swift manner.
